Mysuru: University Grants Commission (UGC) has finally come forward to grant recognition to Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) for the year 2018-19. The UGC officials have written to the KSOU to be ready with all needy documents to attend the meeting in New Delhi.

In the Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting which was held in Mysuru on June 4, University Vice-Chancellor Prof.D. Shivalingaiah had demonstrated requesting the recognition for the university and it helped in getting the recognition, according to the sources.

The meeting was attended by the members of the committee, 16 parliamentarians, both from Loka Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The VC had elaborately spoken about the problems being faced by the Open University on the occasion.

“The university doesn’t have recognition since 2013-14. Injustice has been caused to the lakhs of students of the university. Though the High Court has directed to give recognition, it is not being followed,” he reminded. Along with that, he had copies of a memorandum submitted to the committee presidents in 2013-14 and 2015-16.

After listening to the request of the VC, the committee members directed the UGC and Joint Secretary of Human Resource Department to give recognition to the KSOU. Later they visited KSOU and discussed with the staff.

Within two days of these developments, on June 6 the KSOU has received a letter from UGC that they are ready to give recognition. The UGC has also asked it to give details of regional centres, their infrastructure, staff strength and other resources.
