Mysuru: Tipu Sultan not only promoted Kannada and gave a new lease of life to many Hindu temples including the famous Sharadambe temple but also his administrative language was Kannada, said District Minister G T Devegowda.

Amid tight security in and around Kalamandir, the 269th birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan was celebrated peacefully on Saturday, November 10. As part of security measures to prevent untoward incidents with the BJP threatening to hold protests opposing the celebration, the city police had deployed more than 70 personnel including six inspectors and kept vigil through nearly 25 CCTV cameras as well at Kalamandir.

Speaking at the programme organised by the district administration in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture and Tipu Jayantotsava Samithi, he said, “Some people including opposition leaders, without knowing proper history and background of Tipu Sultan, are unnecessarily involved in staging protest. Tey are trying to twist the history of Tipu Sultan whose contribution is immense not only to Karnataka but also to the country. To remember the humane service rendered by various personalities including Basavanna, Dr. B R Ambedkar, Valimiki, Devaraj Urs and Kempegowda, the government celebrates jayantis. On the same line, government, for the past four years, is celebrating Tipu Jayanti whose contribution to Karnataka and Kannada is immense. The opposition playing politics in the name of such visionaries will not work and people will teach them lesson in the coming election.”

“It may be recalled that even those who are opposing Tipu Jayanti including former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and Jagadish Shettar, too had celebrated Tipu Jayanti. Now just for political mileage, they are creating confusion among the people by coming up with irrelevant comments and baseless allegations against Tipu Sultan who was the only king to be killed on the battlefield. Instead of coming together and celebrating the event, the BJP leaders are just involved in staging protests”, added G T Devegowda. He also mentioned that based on doctor’s advice, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy was taking rest and that’s the reason he couldn’t attend the programme and on the occasion he also mentioned that it was former prime minister H D Devegowda who brought in 4 percent reservation for the minorities.

‘CM, DyCM’s absence, disrespect to Muslim community’
MLA Tanveer Sait said, “Absence of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister Parameshwarappa for Tipu Jayanti celebration has brought disrespect to the Muslim community. Kumaraswamy who is staying in H D Kote limits should atleast have made some time to take part in the celebration at H D Kote. Apart from this, a lot of restrictions by the police has prevented the people from taking part in the programme. Those opposing should also know that Tipu was also instrumental behind setting up the KRS dam and if he was there for another few years, he would have also have solved the Cauvery river issue.” On the occasion, he also mentioned that it was not Tipu Sultan who introduced Persians to Indian, infact it was Muhammad Ghori.Qutubuddin Aibak who introduced Persians to India in 1172.

‘Set up Tipu Study Centre at Mysuru Varsity’
To take up in-depth study on Tipu Sultan and his contribution to Karnataka and India, Tanveer Sait requested District Minister G T Devegowda to set up the Tipu Sultan Study Centre at the University of Mysore. Sait also assured of financial help to H D Umashankar, Associate Professor, Government First Grade College, K R Pete who spoke about Tipu Sultan to come out with a book on the ruler.

Noted absentees for Tipu Jayanthi programme
The noted absentees for Tipu Jayanti programme include Tourism Minister S R Mahesh, MLA A H Vishwanath, Janata Dal (S) State President and MLA Nagendra and MLA Ramdas.
