Mysuru: Most of the problems faced by the society today, be it economic, social, health or others can be overcome through an involvement in sports activities, said C Basavaraju, Vice Chancellor (In-charge), University of Mysore (UoM).
He was speaking after inaugurating the four-day south zone inter university Kho-Kho competition for men, organised by the Department of Physical Education, UoM here at its Sports Pavilion on January 17.
“A strong society can be built by promoting physical and sports activity and probably not with money, the economical stability or through science and technology. Across the globe, the healthiest persons are usually found among the sports persons.
We are concentrating more on traditional education and pay least importance to physical education. Physical education should be placed among first pedestal compared to the rest of the education. Traditional education can only bring you job opportunity, placement and good reputation but it will never fetch you health, which is fundamental for every individual-physical and mental health”, added Basavaraju.
“Sports activities and healthcare are the two faces of same coin. One cannot be separated from other. If we ensure good health, we can ensure a good and healthy society. Hence, sports activities and health are interlinked. Today sports activities are applauded not only across the country but also across the globe. Sports activities are not confined only to get prizes and individual fame or reputation, but this field helps promote social integration, national spirit and brotherhood. Unfortunately the financial help extended to promote sports activities is not appreciable and needs further promotion. More the sports persons, coming forward to strengthen their physical and mental personality, more the state will become strong and the nation vibrant”, added Basavaraju.
“It is unfortunate that today more number of healthcare centres are coming up across the country for the reason that physical activities are not taking wider perspective and greater importance. If youth actively participate in physical or sports-related activities the healthcare centres can be reduced substantially in the state”, said Basavaraju.
B.Praveen Kumar of University of Mysore’s kho-kho team took the oath on behalf of all the participants. The four-day championship witnessed 57 universities from across south zone. Earlier, JNTU, Hyderabad, was adjudged as the best team in the march past, followed by University of Kerala and Gulbarga University.
Bharathi, Registrar, UoM, B Mahadevappa, Finance Officer, Krishnaiah, Director (in-charge), Department of Physical Education, Seshanna, former principal, DOS Physical Education were also present.
University of Kerala registers easy win over Christ University:
The University of Kerala registered a 16-point (21-5) win over Christ University, Bengaluru to enter the second round on the inaugural day of the four-day South Zone Inter-University men’s kho-kho championship thanks to some inspiring play by Syed (4 min.20 s & scored 2 points) and Akshay (3 min.30 s & scored 3 points).
In other important games, Davanagere University ( Madhu Thejas played 3 min.10 s & scored 1 point) scored a 14-8 win over Rayalseema University, while UAHS Shivamogga scored a 18-14 win over Vikram Simhapur University, Nellore and sailed into the second round.
