South zone level conference on critical care from Aug 31

Mysuru: The Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, Mysuru Chapter, for the first time in the city, is organising an annual South Zone Conference on Critical Care 2018 at Silent Shores from August 31 to September 2.

Raghunath Aladakatti, Chairman of Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, Mysuru Chapter who is also the organising secretary, said, “The theme of the conference ‘Infections in Intensive Care–A Challenge’ will focus mainly on infections in the ICU. Many patients get admitted to the ICU with various infections and ailments with various ailments, be it poisoning, stroke, trauma and some of these patients are very much prone to developing infections in any part of the body when admitted. This conference specially addresses this issue and focuses on portraying the most recent advances in treating these infections with the common centralised approach. The workshop involves mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, critical care ultrasound, sepsis stewardship and critical care nursing course. In mechanical ventilation workshop, the emphasis will be laid upon getting the basics right. The delegates get hands-on experience on how to handle ventilators, various types of setting/modes that could be used in different scenarios.” More than 1000 delegates from across the country are expected to take part in the conference and workshop.”

He also mentioned that the delegates would be apprised of the most recent updates in mechanical ventilation. In addition, the experts will be explaining about ECMO, which is one of the life-saving measures. Apart from this critical care nursing course will also be conducted to mainly depict the importance of nurses in ICU set-ups. “Nurses are a pivotal part of ICU and management of the critically ill. The course is specially formulated to help them better their knowledge about managing critically ill patients, maintain the comprehensive quality of care and learn to facilitate deft intervention. In spite of significant improvement in technology in critical care science, it is a big challenge to prevent and fight against infection in intensive care medicine”, added Raghunath.

The first two days there will be a workshop on topics which includes fine-tuning of ventilator management in ICU, the role of ultrasound and 2D Echo in ICU, emphasis on early recognition and management of critically ill patients. The comprehensive course deals with the diagnosis and management of sepsis, aiming to guide monitoring and medical management in order to prevent organ failure. On August 31, an academic session on end of life care will be held at the same venue from 6 PM to 7.30 PM. The public can also take part in the session.
