Mysuru: The University of Mysore is all set to get the record fourth in-charge vice chancellor (VC) in little more than a year. The term of incumbent In-charge Vice Chancellor C Basavaraju ends on May 2 with end of his deanship. The new in-charge VC is expected to be nominated on May 2 by the Governor of Karnataka.

Ever since K S Rangappa stepped down from the office on January 10, 2017, the post of vice chancellor is vacant. The government is yet to appoint a permanent vice chancellor to the University of Mysore even after 15 months have lapsed. In this time, three senior deans of the university, including Basavaraju, have served as in-charge vice chancellors.

Yashwanth Dongre was in-charge for six weeks till February 20, 2017. From February 20 to November 22, Dayanand Mane replaced him. The present In-charge V C Basavaraju who took charge on November 23, has served for nearly six months on this posting.

It is gathered that Umesh, Head of Physics Department, who is the present Senior Dean of the varsity might occupy the seat of in-charge VC till the permanent vice chancellor is appointed.

In an exclusive conversation with NewsKarnataka, Basavaraju shared his experiences of nearly six-month tenure as in-charge VC and said, “With support from teaching and non teaching staff, I have managed to do some good work in the university. I gave first priority to increase the number of good academic programmes including workshop, conferences and seminars in almost all the departments to add to the existing knowledge of the students. Later, I initiated the process of Career Advancement Scheme to give promotion to nearly 120 teachers. Apart from this, I also made sincere efforts to get approval from the government for filling nearly 70 backlog vacancies. But due to election code of conduct, both were delayed. During my short tenure, I was also able to identify some potential officers and put them in right places for the right administration of the university.”
