Mysuru: Senior Congress leader and former MLA Mukhtar Unnisa Begum passed away at her residence in Bannimantap here on November 11.
Few minutes after coming from Columbia Asia Hospital, 82-year-old Begum passed away at her residence. Three months ago also when she was admitted at Columbia Asia Hospital and underwent cardiac related treatment her health condition was not good.
Speaking to Newskarnataka, Dr Upendra Shenoy, Chief of Medical Service, Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysuru said, “On Friday, she was brought to the hospital and her condition was not good. She was brought to the hospital in an arrested situation and there was no BP. Immediately, she was taken to the emergency room where our experts did cardiac massage and put her on ventilator. As she didn’t show any sign of improvement for three days and due to her poor health condition, the family members took her home on Monday evening.”
She was the first Muslim women MLA from South India to be elected to legislative assembly. For Ramzan and Bakrid festival, without fail she used to call all her friends As part of Ramzan celebration, she used to donate clothes and food kit worth Rs 600 to 1000 to needy people since past nearly three decades. Apart from this, she used to invite more non-Muslims for the celebration.
Along with her daughter, son-in-law, grand-daughter and other relatives, she used to welcome the guests at her residence in Bannimantap which is located next to Little Elly School. Begum was also AICC member and represented N R constituency from 1984 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1996 she served as MLC.
Mallige Veeresh, Chairperson of Zoo Authority of Karnataka said, “She is a great lady and born Congress leader. For her Congress was everything. Without fail, she used to attend all Congress meetings. She was an inspiration for most Congress leaders.
