Mysuru: Dhananjaya, 37-year-old elephant from Dubare Elepant camp is all set to make his debut during this year’s Dasara. He has been groomed for the glorious event and many believe that he seems to be promising enough to emerge as the second leg of Howdah elephants.

Arjuna, the Dasara hero, who carries the golden Howdah can participate in the festival for the next eight years as elephants are allowed to be a part of the event only till they reach 67 years of age. It is necessary for the Dasara organisers to make sure that the second leg of elephants are groomed and it is now said that Dhananjaya has shown all the qualities which may bring him to the league of Dasara elephants along with Drona, Gajendra, Gopi and Abhimanyu.

Dhananjaya had a rather not so impressive entry when he was welcomed at Mysuru Palace recently. A nervous Dhananjaya took many aback, but since then he has come a long way. He is said to be very comfortable and has impressed the forest authorities with his learnability and skills. The forest officials were so elated by his performance that they even decided to have 200 kg sandbags on his back and he walked the burden comfortably without showing any signs of uneasiness.

Veterinarian Dr Nagaraj, who is in charge of all the 12 Dasara elephants informed that Dhananjaya was captured from Yesaluru Range in Hassan division on November 2013 and in five years he is in the Dasara festival, which in itself is marvellous.

“If he continues to show the growth and behaviour, I see him becoming the next howdah elephant in next seven to eight years. He is docile and obedient and that is something that is required in howdah elephant,” he says.
