Mysuru: The registration of new two-wheelers below 100cc has been temporarily stopped at Mysuru RTO with the purpose of preventing pillion riders becoming easy victims in road mishaps.

More than 50 percent of the vehicles which are registered at Mysuru RTO are two-wheeler below 100cc. A notification to this effect was issued by the transport department on October 16 in compliance with the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. The rule says that no pillion seat shall be attached to motorcycle with less than 100 cc engine. The number of two wheelers with engines smaller that 100 cc are more in number in the market. According to official sources in the RTO, the registration of these vehicles have been halted as of now, till they get a clear picture on the issue from the government.

However, the decision of the government to not permit pillion seat on below 100 cc bikes has not gone down well with many. Srikanth Raj Urs, Automobile dealer said “The government should rethink on stopping pillion seat for two wheeler which are less than 100cc especially when 50 per cent of registration vehicles fall in this category. This will compel the working classes to shell out more to purchase a two-wheeler, which is out of their reach. If the 100cc cost 57,000, two wheeler with 110cc engine costs nearly Rs 66,000. Instead of stopping pillion seat, the authorities should start spreading awareness to people on dos and donts while riding vehicle; the licensing authorities should also think twice before giving license to vehicle users. If we focus on these aspects definitely accidents can be avoided and precious lives can be saved”.

BJP leaders led by former district minister SA Ramdas including youths from various colleges staged protest condemning state government decision to ban pillion riders for two wheelers with less than 100 cc. The ban is not applicable to the existing two wheelers but applicable only to new two wheelers which are less than 100cc. Ramdas who led the protest in front of RTO office said “When such rule doesn’t exist in other states, why only Karnataka is focusing on this.
