Mysuru: Member of Parliament Prathap Simha has pressed for changes in the policing system in the country.

Speaking after inaugurating 45th annual ‘Knights in Khaki’ Police Shield Presentation – 2018 held at Olive Garden under the auspices of Mysore Round Table – 21 (MRT-21) and Mysore Ladies Circle – 9 (MLC-9) he said that even seven decades after the British left, we are following their policing system, which has become obsolete now.

“In the interest of the people, the policing system needs to be changed. Apart from this police should also behave politely when people come to a police station for various problems,” he said and in a way took a dig at many IPS officers stating that nowadays it has become a trend among IPS officers to imitate ‘Singham’ and post their pictures on social networking sites.

“Real officers don’t imitate the reel. They become popular only by winning hearts of people through good work, ” the MP said emphasising on a better educational opportunity for the children of Men in Khaki.

He said that given an opportunity, he would try to provide free education including engineering and medicine to the children of police personnel below the rank of Superintendent of Police.

Police Commissioner Subramanyeshwara Rao who also spoke on the occasion appreciated Pratap Simha for knowing the real problems of police personnel and endorsed his view on reforming the policing system.

“If there is a problem, then either the police or the politicians are blamed first. The present policing system, which we are practicing was established by the British to protect colonial rule. After independence, no transformation happened barring minor changes to various Acts. We need to change policing system to the extent that even colour of our uniform must be replaced, ” he said.

Several policemen were awarded for their services. R.M. Somashekar, who is serving as the Head Constable at V.V. Puram Police Station has been instrumental in solving many cases such as dacoity, extortion, and burglaries among others and was first to receive the awards.

The other award winners are K.C. Gangadhar, a Constable at Narasimharaja Police Station, Nasreen Taj, a woman Head Constable serving at ACP Office, Devaraja Division, S.R. Raveesh, Constable serving at Krishnaraja Traffic Police Station, Prabhulingaradhya, an ASI at Nanjangud Traffic Police Station, M. Mahesh, a Head Constable serving in Mysuru South Police Station , Ashwini, woman Constable serving at Hunsur Rural Police Station and Rajkumar, an Armed Head Constable serving at District Armed Reserve Police Force.
