Mysuru: As much as 80,000 cusecs of water released from Kabini reservoir here has inundated the downstream areas of Nanjangud and surrounding villages.
The flow in Kapila river has considerably increased due to the unrelenting rainfall in the district. The Mysuru- Nanjangud National Highway has been swamped by the flood waters from the river. The district administration has halted the movement of traffic on this section of the national highway.
Fears of floods have been heightened in Nanjanagudu town limits. Water has entered into the houses at Okkalageri, Saraswati Colony and Topinabeedi. District administration has issued a warning regarding potential flooding at Kallakanahundi, Bokkali, Heggige, Toremaavu, Sutturu and surrounding areas.
The district administration has opened soup kitchens and emergency shelters at Kalamandir near Nanjanagudu Temple.
Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Shankar visited the flooded areas and took stock of the damage. He informed that three rescue teams have been formed for disaster management and orders have been issued to the revenue, police and town corporation officials to be alert.
In the coming days, the incessant rainfall in upstream areas of Wayanad in Kerala could further increase the inflow to Kabini. More water could be let out from the Kabini reservoir. This is the highest inflow into the river in 25 years, said sources.
