Pretending to be accident victims, duo extorts money from vehicle owners

Mysuru: The Kuvempunagar Police nabbed two persons on November 8, involved in a series of extortion cases, pretending to be road accident victims.

Zameer and Jameel were nabbed by city police after verifying the authenticity of complaints against the duo.

On October 27, the duo came in a hurry on N R Mohalla main road to dash against a slow moving car driven by a person named Srinivas. Later they accused Srinivas of not employing indicators while driving, thereby causing serious injury. However, Srinivas agreed to get the victims hospitalised and bear the hospital expenses.

Midway through their journey to the hospital, they demanded cash to foreclose the case. Srinivas expressed his inability to pay cash and assured them of payment after withdrawing money from an ATM. Pretending to draw money, Srinivas informed his friend about the incident and the told the duo to wait for a while to make payment. When Srinivas agreed to pay the extortion amount in the presence of his friend, the duo suspected danger and fled the scene after hurling abuses. Meanwhile, Srinivas had taken few pics of the duo and circulated the same to all his friends on WhatsApp group forewarning them of imminent danger while driving on city roads.

The duo surfaced again this morning near Vijaya Bank Circle in Kuvempunagar limits to trap a new victim named Vishwanath Pradahan, a resident of the area. Srinivas travelling on the same road saw the men and being aware of the duo’s modus operandi raised an alarm. He succeeded in getting the duo caught taking public help and handed them to over to police.

During interrogation, police learnt of their crimes executed in V V Puram, Jayalakshipuram and Udayagiri limits.

Kuvempunagar Police are trying to extract more details from Jameel and Jaleel.
