Mysuru: The city police launched a massive crackdown on non-ISI helmets and half helmets as part of a special drive to create awareness among motorists on the dangers associated with their use in the city on January 2. Motorists thronged helmet and auto gear outlets in the city soon after police launched the special drive, aiding spurt in sales of ISI/BIS brand helmets.

Police launched the special drive termed “Operation Safe Drive” between 10 AM and 1.30 PM to implement 100 percent usage of helmets and stop motorists from wearing non-standard helmets, which fail to provide adequate protection in times of accidents. They seized 15501 non-standard helmets in total during the drive apart from 1390 seized from various sales outlets.

The drive was launched after police noticed motorists wearing sub-standard helmets to evade fines levied. The police raided outlets selling unbranded helmets first and seized stocks from street vendors doing brisk business before embarking on the special drive.

Irked by the attitude of the vendors despite enforcing such measures in the past, police took the drive seriously this time. Giving none respite this time, police stopped motorists at several points and warned them.

Soon after the police launched the drive, motorist’s flocked shops selling ISI/BIS marked helmets and all outlets on Chamaraja Double Road “reaped harvest” from the police drive.
