Mysuru: The Shatabdi Express running between Mysore and Chennai will be fitted with an electric locomotive after the completion of electrification of double track between Mysuru and Bengaluru.

Despite the completion of electrification, the decision to run electric locomotives had been delayed.

However, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to flag off the first electric train between Mysuru and Bengaluru on February 19, the long wait of the people in the region is expected to come to an end.

There are 24 diesel trains running currently between two cities. If electric locomotives are employed, instead of diesel ones, it will result in a net saving of Rs 10 Lakh a day and Rs 3 Crore a month.

A total of Rs 210 Crore was spent towards electrification of double track.

The Shatabdi Express train takes around 2 hours to cover the distance and with the electric locomotive, it is likely to be reduced by 10 minutes gradually.
