Mysuru: The official inauguration of double line and electrification between Mysuru and Bengaluru railway line scheduled for December 26 in Bengaluru has been postponed and if everything goes as per plans then the same project may be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mysuru during first week of January.

Though it was expected to be inaugurated by Ministry of Railways by flagging off Shatabdi Express train in Bengaluru, the event was cancelled at the last minute as the Prime Minister is believed to have shown keen interest to inaugurate the same in Mysuru.

Railway Safety (Southern Circle) Commissioner K A Manoharan, after conducting inspection of electrification of track between Mysuru and Bengaluru has given green signal for operation of electric train between Mysuru and Bengaluru. With change in plans, the railway authorities of Mysuru division are on toes, identifying suitable place to host the mega event.

Once electric train is operated the travel time between Mysuru and Bengaluru will come down by 15 minutes. However, the added benefit is its cost effectiveness and eco-friendly factors. Every day 24 trains depart from Mysuru and with this, the railways will be saving nearly Rs 10 lakh per day, Rs 3 crore per month and Rs 36 cr per year. Apart from this, the pick up speed is far more faster in electric locomotive, when compared to diesel locomotives. The electric locomotive can stop faster comparatively as well.

Though the project was sanctioned along with track doubling in 2007-08 rail budget it gained momentum in 2011 and got completed just few days back. The initial cost of electrification was Rs 69.5 crore for 139-km stretch between Bengaluru and Mysuru at the rate of Rs 50 lakh per km. But the revised cost for the project is estimated around Rs 210 crore. The project is taken on cost sharing basic-that is 50 percent from central and 50 percent from state government. The project is being handled by the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE). Mysuru-Bengaluru double line project with electrification was taken up in three phases-Bengaluru-Kengeri (12.22 km), Kengeri-Ramanagaram (32.17 km) and Ramanagaram-Mysuru (93.86 km).
