Mysuru: While several of us prefer to admit our wards to private schools, the Government Higher Primary school in Kumbarkoppal seems to have struck a chord with the parents so much so that few private school goers too have taken admissions to this government school.

The school, which got a high tech toilet facility just a few days ago added another feather in its cap by being the first government school to get an exclusive hall to practice Yoga.

Presently, the school has over 700 students studying from class I to 8. Notably, over 80 students previously attending private schools left their institutes to join the school this academic year. Last year too nearly 90 students, studying at private schools shifted to the government school because of the facilities it has to offer. It is gathered that majority of students left private schools due to various reasons including lack of quality teaching and trained teachers.

On the contrary, the Kumbarkoppal government higher primary school has turned into a model government school in the city. The school authorities had recently introduced smart classroom, with the help of donors for the welfare of students and enable them to understand the subjects easier. Every day the students also perform Yoga including meditation.

For many parents in the surrounding places the school is far better than the private schools, thanks to the wholehearted effort of Head Master Naganna and his staff members and alumni of the school who managed to get few NGOs including Agastya Foundation, Kalisu Foundation, SVG Kumbarkoppal, Abyudaya Sangha. School Development Monitoring Committee to do its part. With the help of private donors, the school has got full-fledged science lab which has received good response from the students. The students are delighted with the facility in the school. Apart from a well-equipped science lab, the school has nearly 20 computers and more than 5000 collections of books in their library. To improve students English which has become prime important in the present education system, Kalisu foundation imparts English coaching classes for these students. The coaching classes imparted by NGOs are conducted only after school hours.

There are nearly 715 students, including more than 325 girls who are getting good coaching not only from the teachers belonging to the school but also from various volunteers. Last year more than 90 students have come from 11 different private schools and enrolled for different classes including few for the eighth standard. The students are also trained for various competitive exams including entrance exams for Navodaya School and also for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) exam. The school authorities are not only giving importance to academics but also overall development of the students like promoting them in sports and music.

Speaking to Newskarnataka Naganna said, “With the support of all teachers we managed to provide better facilities to our students. We managed to add few facilities including solar panel, additional computers, hi-tech toilet facility which is built at the cost of Rs 25 lakh with the help of donors and other like-minded people. Apart from this NGOs are really helping us a lot to improve our students. From first standard itself, we are giving importance to English. The new room for doing Yoga can easily accommodate more than 100 people. We are giving importance to Yoga so that students can improve their concentration”. FANUC, private company contributed to the construction of Yoga hall. Member of Parliament Pratap Simha inaugurated the new facility.”

Pratap interacts with students:

After inaugurating the new facility Pratap Simha interacted with the students for over three hours. He patiently answered all queries posed by the students which included how you got into politics, what you do during your leisure time, about childhood days and what’s his contribution as an MP. Pratap too posed few questions to students to check their capability.
