Mysuru: Kerala depended on Mysuru market for grains and vegetables. Now for the past nearly 10 days, due to floods in Kerala, nearly 90 percent of the vegetables from APMC have not been transported due to lack of connectivity. Following this, the prizes of most of them have come down. Farmers are seen selling vegetables at throw away prizes.

Hardly any vehicles, including small goods transporters, are coming from Kerala due to which the farmers are suffering losses. They are not getting the right prizes for their vegetables. Apart from nearly 45 to 50 small goods vehicles, every day on an average, 35 trucks used to come from Kerala for various vegetables.

Speaking to Newskarnataka R Anand, Secretary, Grain Merchants Association, APMC said, “Due to lack of connectivity with Kerala, the vegetables and grains business have come down drastically. The farmers growing vegetables are suffering a lot. The grains can be kept for more days but it’s not the same as perishable items like vegetables which need to be sold immediately. We have also instructed farmers that till the situation in Kerala gets to normal not to get their vegetables. Apart from Sultan Batheri, where we get a couple of vehicles, 90 percent of the business related to grains and vegetables have come down.”

Helping hand to people Kerala and Kodagu

Anand also mentioned that the association members had pooled relief materials for both Kodagu and Kerala.
