Mysore: After thirty-three-years a politician from Mysore has become CM. He is the second after D Devaraj Urs from Mysore district reigned as CM from May 10 1972 to 1977 and 1978 to 1980.
It’s the co-incidence that Devaraj Urs later joined Janata Party, while Siddaramaiah migrated to Congress from Janata Parivar. He was the leader of backward communities since the past 40 years and was known for secular values. His dream of becoming CM has realized in its opportune time.
It’s the first time in the history of Karnataka that the post of CM has gone to Kuruba community. Siddaramaiah was a key leader in Janata Parivar even during the reign of Devaraj Urs, but owing to change in political situation had to join Congress party that he always opposed. He was fortunate to become CM among Congress men. No sooner the assembly elections were over, AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi announced that Siddaramaiah will be the next CM; the entire political situation changed. The strong Congress waves across the state, and Siddaramaiah won the assembly elections from Varuna legislative constituency with a margin of over 30,000 proved his popularity.
Siddaramaiah launched AHINDA when he realized that his dream of becoming CM is not possible with JDS that is limited to Gowda’s domain and joined Congress. The political analysts speculated that he would survive for long because of his straight forward nature and the culture of high command prevails in Congress. The veteran Congress men also doubted whether Siddaramaiah would be selected for the coveted post. But, all that is now history.
