Mysuru: If everything goes well, the ongoing project of multi-level parking atop Chamundi Hill, where more than 1000 cars and 500 two-wheelers can be completed by September first week. The authorities are confident that it will be completed well before the start of Dasara. Once the project becomes a reality, parking woes atop the hill will be things of the past.

Every day, an average of more than 10,000 people visit Chamundeshwari Temple, which is one of the famous tourist spots in Mysuru. Especially during Friday, an average of15,000 to 20,000 people visit Chamundeshwari Temple. During their visit to the temple, there were lots of problems with parking the vehicles. Following this, the district administration felt the urgent need to provide parking atop the hill after it came across tourists parking vehicles on the road and reports of clashes between vehicle owners and shopkeepers. The shopkeepers object to tourists parking their vehicles saying it would obstruct business. Private vehicles were restricted on the hills during Ashada Shukravaras and devotees had to park their vehicles in the special area near Lalith Mahal and take free special buses provided by the district administration. After going through all these problems, the then deputy commissioner Shikha came up with a multi-level parking proposal and later it was taken further by former deputy commissioner D Randeep. Once the multi-level parking is ready, private vehicles could park atop the hills even during Ashada Shukravaras. During Ashada Shukravaras, more than 50,000 people visit the temple.

The multilevel parking which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 79.9 Crore can easily accommodate more than 1000 cars. The construction authorities have been given provision for jack system facility. Though the deadline for completion of the project was December 2017, due to the presence of a lot of rocks in the construction area and delay in getting environmental clearance, the project proceeded at a slow pace.

According to reliable sources, 90 percent of the work is completed and just works on the road and a floor needs to be completed. The total area earmarked for the project is 8 acre and the built-up area is 31,000 sq meter. Though the foundation for the project was laid in April 2016, the work was delayed due to various hurdles and the actual work started by November 2016 and was expected to be completed by September first week, this year.

  • Accommodation of cars-More than 1000
  • Total area-31,000 sq mtr
