Mysuru: After a lot of effort and hard work, the girls of Government Girls High School, Peoples Park from Mysuru by winning the gold medal in the All India Championship (National Urban Games 2017) organised by Urban Games Federation of India, qualified to take part in the International Indo Nepal Urban Games to be held at Kathmandu on January 27 and 28. However, due to financial instability the team is in a dilemma whether to take part in the International Kabbadi competition or not.

The girls trained by Mohammed Rafeeqh Pasha, Physical Education Teacher of Government Girls High School in People’s Park in Mysuru displayed outstanding Kabbadi skills during their stint at the national kabbadi competition held at Haryana. After lots of hard work, the girls managed to win the gold medal and qualified to take part in the Indo-Nepal Urban Games to be held at Kathmandu. Before winning gold in the National Urban Games, Government Girls School had even won gold in the National Rural Games organised by the Rural Games Federation of India held at Hosur, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu. Though they got qualified to take part in the international competition which was also held in Kathmandu, the students couldn’t take part in the competition owing to lack of money.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, Mohammed Rafeeqh Pasha said, “This is not the first time our girls excelled and qualified to take part in the international kabbadi competition. Prior to this event, Rural Games Federation of India too organised the event and our girls won the gold medal in the national competition and were qualified to take part in the international event but due to lack of sponsorship we couldn’t take part in the international event. This is the second time our students have qualified for the international event. If we fail to motivate them, they may get demoralised. Majority of the girls come from poor financial background. If these girls are motivated, definitely in days to come, they have all the capability to go on to represent the country. For the welfare of these students, I have decided to approach the corporation, district administration, DYES and even DDPI for their financial assistance. Hope the talented players who after lot of hard work got qualified to take part in the international competition, are not disappointed again.” To take part in the competition, the school needs Rs 6 Lakh for its overall expenditure.

When this was brought to the notice of Manjula, DDPI, Mysuru, she assured to do her best from the department. “It’s really a honour that our government school girls from Mysuru have qualified to take part in the international competition. I will speak to our physical education official concerned and try to do my level best for the students”, added Manjula.

Sultana, captain of the team said, “It was not at all easy going for us. After lots of hard work we managed to win gold medal in the All India competition. This is the second opportunity for us to represent the country. Hope if we get financial support from the government, our dream of taking part in the international event will come true. Though we had the opportunity when we won gold medal in the National Rural Games organised by Rural Games Federation of India, due to lack of money we couldn’t take part. Most of us were disappointed.” This is the same with Kavya. “If we get an opportunity, definitely we will do well and try to win medal for the country.”

K Suresh, Assistant Director, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports said, “Let them give a representation. I will forward the same to our senior authorities in Bengaluru and try to do my best.”
