Mysuru: The ongoing modernisation work of the Central Railway Workshop which is also called Mysore Workshop, in Ashokapuram undertaken at the cost of Rs 35.44 Crore is expected to be completed by June, said Member of Parliament Pratap Simha. Once it is upgraded it can handle more number of coaches from the existing 70 coaches to 80 coaches per month.

As of now every month, Central Railway Workshop in Mysuru handles 70 coaches including six to seven modern coaches (repairing and maintenance). Once the workshop is upgraded, more number of modern coaches will be introduced and gradually the conventional coaches will be stopped. It also aims for improvements in safety requirements expected as per the norms of Factories Act.” He also mentioned that as of now there are nearly 1600 employees working in the workshop and in days to come, efforts will on to fill up 300 vacant posts so that they can take up additional works which will be started once the modernisation work gets completed.

He also mentioned that the project mainly involves Construction of new Carriage Lift (CL)/Heavy Corrosion Repair (HCR) shop which is of Coach Over Coach design. The capacity of this shop is 22 coaches, two EOT cranes of 60 T capacity (30 mtrs span each) having twin Crab with 25T auxiliary hoist. In addition to this, construction of office buildings for HCR/CL shop, new computer centre, personnel office, providing fire hydrant system inside the shops and laying of four broad gauge tracks in the grid for stabling more coaches is also planned.
