Inspiring ‘No bag day’ policy, a hit among students at Vijaya Vittal School

Mysuru: Little school kids bogged down by the weight of the school bag is a very common sight, but for students of Vijaya Vittal School here in Mysuru, the burden of bags will be off their shoulders for two Saturdays-ie every second and fourth Saturday in a month!

‘No bag day’ is being followed in this school on second saturdays and now, motivated by the outstanding response to the same, the school management has decided to double the ‘treat’ from the next academic year starting July. This policy is applicable to students of standards 1 to 10

R Vasudev Bhat, Secretary of Vijaya Vittala Educational Institutions took up the initiative to introduce the ‘No Bag Day’ on second Saturday this July in order to lessen the burden on the students at least once a month, an initiative which garnered a possitive response from both the students and their parents.

Speaking to Newskarnataka R Vasudev Bhat said “Year after year, the burden on school children keeps increasing and every day I see them carrying so much weight on their shoulders. Therefore after having a discussing with our staff members I decided to introduce ‘no bag day’.”

Making a note on the effect the change has made on the students, he said that this has helped them to improve their overall personality development. Apart from this, he has also introduced chess and yoga in order to help with their development. “Whereever I go, if see good practices I try to impliment them in my institution immediately,” he added.

SP Asha, Head Master, Vijaya Vittala School, described the students’ happiness and eargerness in awaiting the ‘no bag’ Saturday adding that they conduct various programmes for the students including screening short movies, singing, dancing, picture composition, one minute game, various memory games, cooking without fire, and a plethora of other arts and crafts activities.

She also said that they planned to allow the students to prepare the question papers themselves in order to rid them of the fear of examinations.

Manjula, DDPI, Mysuru in appreciation of the ‘no bad day’ policy, said that it was a remarkable idea and spoke of her intention of bringing the policy to the attention of other officials so that they can plan out a similar policy to be implemented in other schools.
