Mysuru: To condemn the violence against doctors in West Bengal, the members of the Indian Medical Association, Mysuru Chapter staged a protest by wearing black badges. To express solidarity with the doctors of West Bengal, while also ensuring that the patients are not put into inconvenience, most of the doctors across Mysuru wore black badges and continued working.

S B Prakash, President of Indian Medical Association, Mysuru, said, “We are worried about the brutal attack on Dr. Paribha Mukherjee at NRS Medical College in Kolkata. The World Medical Association also has condemned the incident and has passed a resolution against violence on healthcare centres and called for bringing in a strong legislation. In the past few days, we have seen violence on doctors and hospitals. The gruesome incident in NRS Medical College is of barbaric nature. Dr. Paribaha who was brutally attacked is critical and fighting for life. IMA condemns the violence perpetrated on a young doctor. The entire medical fraternity expresses its solidarity with the residents who are on strike. Our national president Dr. Santanu Sen visited all the medical colleges in Kolkata and has been in touch with the government and police which has led to arrest of four culprits in this regard. Our national president-elect Dr. Rajan Sharma and secretary general Dr. R V Asokan will be travelling to Kolkata to identify with the residents. On this occasion, we also demand a concrete act against such violence.”

Doctors in West Bengal to stay united and not go to work’

“Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, has threatened the protesting doctors that action will be taken if they failed to report to duty. The doctors across the country are united with the protesting doctors in West Bengal. If the West Bengal government requests service of doctors from other states, none of us will be go. Doctors working in West Bengal are feeling insecure and it is very much important that the central government comes out with the much needed act to safeguard the doctors who are at receiving end without their fault. We also condemn Mamata Banerjee’s statement.”

‘Hundreds of patients from Bengal come to Bengaluru for treatment’

The IMA members also mentioned that the doctors in West Bengal were being targeted by the public without any valid reason. Because of this, many doctors in West Bengal are not taking up surgeries and serious cases, he added. Hence, everyday hundreds of patients from Bengal come to hospitals in Bengaluru including Sathya Sai Baba Hospital for treatment, they said.

Act in Karnataka

“In Karnataka, we have an act which is not the same in many other states. Hence such attacks on doctors are comparatively less in Karnataka”, added Sujatha S Rao, Vice President, IMA, Mysuru.
