Mysuru: District minister GT Devegowda, on Tuesday launched the widening project of Irwin road, which is a major arterial road in the city linking Mysuru railway station to the KSRTC suburban bus stand. The project was pending as there was resistance from the shop owners to part with the land. The road will be developed into a four-lane stretch.
The existing two line road (9mtr road) will be converted into four lane, meaning 18mts. The widening of Irwin Road – one of the busiest roads in Mysuru city has seen a considerable delay owing to various reasons including opposition from the shop owners and various other NGOs. If everything goes according to the plans of the MCC, the demolition works would be taken up shortly to make way for a four-lane road. For the scheme to be implemented, corporation needed the consent of at least 75 percent of the 85 property owners. Hence after getting consent from 75 percent of property owners the work for widening started on Tuesday. According to Corporation Commissioner Jagadeesh the work is expected to be completed by March end.
The road between Railway station circle (Babu Jagjivan Ram Circle) and Arch Gate varies from six to nine mtrs in width and the road will be widened by nine mtrs from the center on both the sides to make it an 18-mtr road. The new road will be converted to four lanes. The entire stretch from Jagjivan Ram circle to Arch Gate has been identified for widening under the funds set aside from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant. Already the stretch from Jagjivan Ram Circle to Ayurveda Hospital circle, the widening is completed and now from Ayurveda Circle to Arch Gate the work need to be undertaken.
GT Devegowda said “The total cost of the project is Rs 43 crore, among which we have spent Rs 37 crore giving compensation to shop owners whose buildings will be demolished as part of the road widening project. Apart from compensation, Rs 4.5 crore will be spent for road work and Rs 33 lakh for dismantling the buildings and we are confident of completing the work by April”.
Mayor Puspalatha Jaganath, Corporation Commissioner Jagadeesh were also present.
