Mysuru: As the Mahalaya Amavasya is observed across the nation on Monday, October 8, marking the beginning of Durga Pooja, and the arrival of the auspicious festive season, Navaratri, the sale of goats in Mysuru, observes a sharp increase as the demand for the meat (mutton) peaks.

Goats are being sold in the fairs. The business in these fairs is sky-rocketing. The practice and tradition that were only seen in the villages have also stepped into the cities.

Mahalaya Amavasya is considered to be the darkest night and most preferred day to please the departed souls. On this day, every Hindu family celebrates by serving sumptuous meal to the departed soul as well as people belonging to the backward community people. This is said to bring in peace and happiness in one’s family.

A ritual of sacrificing goat is also observed, where the animal is chopped and the meat is cooked and served by the family. Such goats are bought in prior to the ritual day and tied in the compounds of ones house.

In Malavalli and Kirugavalu villages of Mandya district, the sale of goats in the fair reaches a mark of Rs 30 Lakh in just a day. This is considered to be a surprise element.
