Mysuru: Anticipatory bail was granted to students Nalini Balakumar and Mardevaiah Shivanna by a Mysuru court on Monday, January 27. The students are facing charges of sedition for holding a 'Free Kashmir' placard in a solidarity protest with victims of the JNU violence at the University of Mysore.
Issuing the order, Additional Sessions Judge Rudolph Mendonca said, "The quantum of punishment for the offence alleged is not exclusively death or imprisonment for life. The fact that she is a young woman and a student. At this stage, there are no materials to show that she has any criminal antecedents or connections with the banned outfits."
The bail order was released on the fulfillment of a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each in the event of arrest by police. The court further instructed the petitioners to not tamper with prosecution witnesses and co-operate with the investigation being carried out.
It can be recalled that the 'Free Kashmir' incident had sparked a volley of statements from political leaders in the state. The Mysuru Bar Association also passed a resolution stating that no advocate would appear for Nalini in court. Following the resolution, nearly 170 advocates from the state signed a "vakalath" for Nalini in her bail application and extended their support to her.
