Mysuru: On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, which is scheduled on July 28, the Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysuru is organising a free Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C screening for the general public at its premise from July 23 to 28.

Hepatitis B and C are viral infections which cause damage to the liver and can lead to both acute and chronic disease. These viruses are highly contagious and are transmitted by transfusion of infected blood, infected needles, unprotected sex or from an infected mother to child. The Hepatitis B and C screening is done by testing a small sample of blood for antigens and antibodies.

“There are more than 300 million people, living with viral hepatitis around the world. It is astonishing to note that more than 90 percent of them, do not even know that they are infected. We have to drastically increase our screening programmes in order to identify such people early and provide them with appropriate care. A failure to do so will expose many more millions to the infection and put lives at risk. Hence, our effort is directed towards early diagnosis, regular follow-up, relevant treatment and mass vaccination”, said Dr Anoop Alva, Consultant Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysuru.

The week-long screening programme is concluded with a public forum discussion on the topic “Hepatitis B and C myths and facts” at the hospital premises between 3 PM and 4 PM on July 28. For appointments call: 0821-3989896/3322333 or Whatsapp 9620389896.
