Mysuru: The Millet Based Non-Dairy Ice Cream packed with omega-3 fatty acids from vegetarian sources by the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), Thanjavur functioning under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is a big hit at the ongoing Food Expo organised as part of International Food Convention at CFTRI premise.

C Anandharamakrishnan, Director of the IIFPT said, “The innovation, Millet Based Non-Dairy Ice Cream packed with omega-3 fatty acids from vegetarian sources is a huge success in the recent days including at the ongoing Food expo at CFTRI. It is made from a blend of millets and has a very good acceptance in sensory preferences among consumers. The millet ice cream has 59% lesser calories, 29% carbohydrates and 43% lesser fat than the normal ice creams available in the market. We have also developed Palatable Cutleries and Cones for the ice cream to flaunt its hike in dietary fibre which were developed using flour based on jackfruit byproducts like bulb, seed and stand. IIFPT’s jackfruit fiber-based cone is an initiative that paves the way to make use of what is being discarded as waste. The texture, flavour, aroma and taste of the cones were highly acceptable and rich in fibre and protein. The product is the first of its kind having high degree of nutrients which supplements the consumers fondness for ice creams as well as dietary needs of the growing children.”

A likely solution for banned plastics
If everything goes well, the environmentally degradable plastics founded by DFRL will be the solution for banned plastics. “Normal plastics take long time to degrade but with some additives they will disintegrate into powder in five days and microbes can easily act on them and decompose them once exposed to sunlight and UV rays. Already it is being used by army personnel in high altitude regions and will also be available for public”, added Gopal Kumar Sharma, Associate Director of DFRL.

Good response for Food Expo
K N Punil Kumar, Engineer in CFTRI who is the in-charge of Food Expo said, “Students from various schools and colleges and general public thronged the Food Expo from 9 AM itself. On day one of the expo, nearly 4000 of them visited.”
