Explosive fun of firecrackers turned dire for six

Mysuru: For 62 year old Mahadevanayaka a fun filled Diwali turned into a nightmare, when a cracker burst in his face at Mallahalli village in Nanjangud Taluk on Friday late evening. He suffered injuries to his right eye, even though he did not even burst the cracker.

He was a mere spectator when his family members were bursting crackers. The doctors treating him at KR Hospital said that his right eye has suffered grievous injuries and has been operated as soon as he arrived in the hospital. The impact was so severe that it damaged the retina of Mahadevanayaka’s eye.

Apart from Mahadevanayaka’s incident, there were five other mishaps which occurred in connection with the bursting of crackers but all of them were minor incidents and they were treated as outpatients. Superintendent of KR Hospital Dr Chandrashekar said, “To treat injuries related to bursting of crackers we have reserved 25 beds in the hospital and we are also well equipped to treat any possible injuries. On Friday there were six reports of fire cracker related injuries and all the six had suffered eye related injuries.Apart from one incident the rest of them are minor incidents. Dr K Satish of KR Hospital is the head of the Ophthalmology department.
