Mysuru: The dream of affordable healthcare for employees in Mysuru remains distant as the upgradation of the ESI hospital moves at snail’s pace. The construction of the modern 100-bed ESI hospital is yet to be completed even after eight years since the works began.

The project began with the intention to provide better speciality care at affordable cost to the beneficiaries of ESI scheme and to reduce the number of referrals to super speciality hospitals.

Mysuru region has 1.3 lakh registered ESI beneficiaries and close to 5 lakh people avail services at the ESI Hospital in Mysuru. This hospital serves the beneficiaries in the Mysuru region’s six districts including Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru.

The upgraded and renovated hospital would be equipped with almost all facilities including three well-equipped operation theatres. The hospital is being modernised at a cost of more than Rs 35 Crore.

The existing ESI hospital lacks adequate facilities to deal with major operations. In an event of any serious cases related to cardio, kidney and other life threatening situations, the patients need to be referred to private super speciality hospital in city. With the influx of patients with serious illnesses increasing, the hospital refers more than 30 patients to the private hospitals everyday. It was proposed that the upgraded facility would not only give better care but also reduce the expenditure of the government for specialised care availed at private hospitals.

The medical facilities at the ESI hospitals are free for the registered beneficiaries and their dependants. The existing facility can serve only a limited number of patients. Today, about 10 to 15 patients come for dialysis at the facility.

When NewsKarnataka contacted the the concerned to know the progress of the project, Dr. Kumar, Director, ESI, Bengaluru said, “A meeting was held on May 16 with the superintendent of ESI Hospital, Mysuru regarding the pending works at the ESI hospital. There are 3-4 technical issues including Operation Theatre and ramp related works that are pending at the moment. These works will be completed in another one and half months’ time. The central government agencies tasked with the construction have assured to complete the work in one and half months’ time. We have also given indent to procure new instruments. The work started eight to nine years ago. Once the hospitals become reality, the referral to private hospitals will come down.”
