JSSWater00Mysuru: It is the educated people who consume more water than the illiterate, said U N Ravikumar, former director, Centre for Appropriate Rural Technologies (CART).

Taking part in the ‘World Water Day’ celebrations organised by the JSS University’s Department of Water and Health, he said, “If everybody becomes literate then think about the fate of water. The water management is very delicate in Karnataka. Hence water literacy is very much a need of the hour. Across the country, 26 percent of agriculture is dedicated to rice and sugarcane which consumes more water. Consumption of these can be hazardous for the diabetics. Hence we should start consuming less sugar and rice and look out for alternatives including maize and millet which is not only healthy but also saves a lot of water.” He also called upon the people to emphasise on rainwater harvesting referring to the importance given to it even 600 years ago.

Experts from across the state took part in the event and discussed the prevailing water crisis. The theme of this year’s Water Day celebration is ‘Leaving No One Behind.
