Mysuru: Returning Officer/Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Shankar took stock of the counting booth here on Tuesday, May 21 at the Maharani's Commerce and Management College.
Addressing a press meet at the DC’s office he said, “The counting process will be carried out on May 23 at 8 AM and we have made necessary arrangements to complete the EVM vote counts by 2 or 3 PM.”
“About eight assembly constituencies come under the Mysuru-Madikeri Lok Sabha constituency. In Madikeri, 18 rounds of counting will be carried out; in Virajpet–19, Periyaptna–16, Hunsur and Chamundeshwari–19 each, Krishnaraja–18, Chamaraja–17 and Narasimharaj–19. Postal ballots will be also be counted”, he added.
Abhiram said, “One supervisor, one assistant supervisor and one micro observer are assigned for each table. Around 131 gazetted officers will be supervisors, 131 Group C government employees assistant supervisors and 141 Central government officials micro observers. For postal ballot counting, eight Additional Assistant Returning Officers and 24 gazetted officers are being appointed. In all, 427 officials will be involved in the counting process. After the randomisation process, the officials will begin counting the votes according to the assembly constituencies.”
“The work of tabulation, sealing and other process will be handled by 800 staff members. People with identity cards will only be allowed inside the counting booth. Media persons can carry their mobile phones only inside the Media Room. No other individual will be allowed to carry their mobile phones inside the premises”, he added.
He also said that in order to maintain law and order in the district, supply of liquor would be prohibited from May 22 midnight till May 24 midnight.
About the security measures at the counting booth he said, “People with ID cards allowed inside the counting booth, will undergo a three-level security check and for extensive checks, CCTV cameras have been installed. In order to record the counting process, 18 videographers have been appointed. Fire fighters are also deployed for emergency purposes. Breakfast, lunch and tea will be provided to the officials and security personnel at the counting booth”, he added.
Abhiram said that the postal ballots will be counted at first and later the EVMs. Roundwise, the results would be declared.
“The results will only be announced after approval by the Election Observer. Processions, conferences, celebrations, fire crackers and weapons are strictly prohibited”, he added.
Speaking about the security measures, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mutturaj said, “Around the counting booth, 4 DCPs, 6 ACPs, 22 inspectors, 23 sub inspectors, 103 ASI, 582 head constables, 6 CAR and 3 KSRP platoons, 30 commandos, 10 mounted police, dog squad and bomb disposal squad are deployed.”
“As the prohibitory orders are in place, we have established checkposts at eight different locations”, he added.
DC Abhiram has clamped Section 144 in the district, particularly in the eight assembly constituencies from May 23, 6 AM till midnight.
