Mysuru: “Innovation is required in every sphere of life, without innovation no country will be a leader in the world,” said renowned scientist, Bharat Ratna awardee, Professor CNR Rao.

During India Higher Education Summit, 2019, ‘Innovation in Education for a Competent Industry’, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry at Radisson Blu Hotel here on Friday, March 15, Prof. Rao delivering his key note address through Video Conference from Bengaluru said “In science and technology, the United States of America No 1, not because of economy and military status but because of its innovative ideas that scientists and researchers come up with in US. In fact, this is also happening in China. Just to promote innovative ideas in the field of science and technology, they are spending a lot of money. Science and technology is the foundation for the future India and hence we have to support and give importance to it”.

“According to me the greatest scientist of all time was Michael Faraday who had only three years of schooling. Whatever he observed, he did it in a particular way. So mere schooling won’t develop innovation. When I was 11 years old i was inspired by CV Raman, and that was the beginning of my interest towards science. Our schooling system is no good, and our curriculum is terrible including that of IIT,” he added.

“There are nearly 60 to 70 million children in India, most of them in villages which is highest in the world. We need to pick talents from the remote corners of India. The government should also allocate more money on education. Currently, only 3.5 percent of the total GDP is spent on education in India, which is very meager when compared to other countries like China who are spending in trillions” said Prof. Rao.

Former Higher Education Minister, BK Chandrashekar, who also spoke on the occasion said “Policy makers including politicians should take responsibility of developing science and technology, and not entirely depend on bureaucrats. Todays classrooms lack inspiration, and the teachings are hardly thought provoking. I have lost hope of any remarkable achievement in the field of education in Karnataka”.

N Muthukumar, former chairman, CII Karnataka, who also spoke on the occasion said “India is one of the fastest growing economy. We talk about unemployment but in reality every industry is short of skills due to which there is 10 to 15 percent drop in production. We don’t have right people at right point of time. Among 100 top companies in the world, 70 of them are being headed by Indians. Though education system has improved over the years, lot more needs to be done”.

D Sudhanva, Summit Chair and MD of Excelsoft Technologies set the Theme for the Summit. Bhaskar Kalale, Chairman, CII Mysuru, also briefed about higher education in India and briefed about the two day event which will be concluded on March 16.

Dr. B Suresh, Vice Chancellor of JSS University and Prof. Hemantha Kumar, Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore also addressed the gathering regarding “Innovation in Higher Education”. Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman of Fortis Hospitals and R Balasubramaniam, Founder and Chairman of GRAAM addressed on the need of “Changes in Policy and Education delivery infrastructure”. The Summit was attended by most of the Universities and Colleges in Karnataka and even from outside Karnataka.
