At last UoM gets ‘permanent’ vice chancellor

Mysuru: At last, after nearly two years, the University of Mysore has got a permanent vice chancellor. Hemanth Kumar, Head of Computer Science Department, Manasagangotri has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Mysore.

After K S Rangappa demitted the office on January 10, 2016, Prof Aisha M Sheriff, the present in-charge vice chancellor of University of Mysore, was the sixth in the position. The other five in-charge vice chancellors after were Yashwanth Dongre, Dayanand Mane, Prof. C Basavaraju, Prof. Ninganna Betsur and Prof. T K Umesh.

More than 82 candidates from different states had applied for the coveted post. On Wednesday, November 14, the committee had shortlisted three names and on Friday, November 16, the Governor gave his approval for Hemanth Kumar.

“I have taken up projects worth more than Rs 150 crore with the assistance of nearly 40 professors. Hence, I am confident of getting the support of my team to take century plus old University of Mysore to new heights,” said G Hemantha Kumar, Chairman of Computer Science Department, Manasagangotri, University of Mysore, who took charge as the new Vice-Chancellor of the varsity on Friday evening, November 16.

After assuming charge, Hemantha Kumar said, “I was involved in 350 researches and have a lot of international exposure. With all the experience in the merit list, I was also among the top candidates but till the last minute, we can’t predict. I come from Sadu Chettiar community where there are nearly 50 families in Mysuru. It’s really great on part of the government to have identified me from this minute community for the coveted post. Team effort is very important and I am confident we will work in tandem for the greater progress of the university.”

Prof. Aisha M Sheriff, who was the sixth in-charge vice-chancellor of the University of Mysore handed over the charge to Hemantha Kumar. Registrar of Administration Rajanna and Registrar of Evaluation Somashekar were also present.
