70 percent of budget earmarked for physically challenged not used

AIISH...Mysuru: Due to lack of awareness among the disabled people, among Rs 3.65 Crore funds which was reserved for them for the year 2018-19 by Mysuru City Corporation, about 70 percent of the money has not been utilised, said K H Jagadeesh, Commissioner, Mysuru City Corporation.

Speaking after inaugurating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities organised by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing on Thursday, December 21, he called upon the parents to make use of the various facilities which are available for the disabled. “After assuming charge as Corporation Commissioner, my far relative had to come to AIISH based on a doctor’s advice. It was then that I came to know of its importance and why people from far off places too come to AIISH for various speech related disorders. In corporation also we have lot of programmes and facilities including sites, houses, medical loans, medical equipment loans and self employment scheme. Due to lack of awareness, the fund earmarked for special people are not being used to the maximum extent. Our staff may also be responsible for this. Hence I request all of you that if your work is not getting done by our subordinates, I request you to directly contact me and I will try to do my level best to get it done.” Corporation reserves 3 percent of its total budget for physically challenged people.

M Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH, Mysuru called upon the people to not restrict the celebration for just one day and instead have the concern all the days. She also requested the parents to ensure their children had a bright future.

As part of the celebration, the city-based AIISH conducted various events.

The theme for the 2018 International Day of Persons with Disability is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.” According to the United Nations, 2018’s theme focuses on empowering people with disabilities for an inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. V Elangovan, Principal, JSS Polytechnic for Differently Abled was also present on the occasion.
