Mysuru: The railway authorities have written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, Hassan district requesting him to immediately airlift 16 of its employees who are trapped in Yedakumeri Railway station due to a landslide on the track and in station premises.

The Yedakumeri station situated in the ghat section is the most affected station and the entire station building is in a dangerous condition. In all, 16 railway staffs at Yedakumeri Railway Station are unable to move in either direction due to heavy landslide with boulders. The station master has given a message that “Heavy rainfall and high-speed wind are continuing. About 50 to 100 mtrs area on both sides of the station is blocked. Due to landslide boulders are falling in front of the station. If the landslide occurs near to the station then the whole of it will be washed away as there is valley on the back side of the station. The situation is very critical.” Reacting to his message, the railway authorities requested Hassan Deputy Commissioner to immediately airlift its 16 employees who are in trouble. A K Sinha, ADRM, Mysuru division, SWR has written in a letter to DC.

Train services on this route suspended till Aug 25

Heavy rainfall in the coastal Karnataka has hit the rail transport adversely. There has been unprecedented rainfall in the Shiradi Ghat section. The rainfall in Sakleshpur is almost double that of last year and the section between Subramanya Road and Yedakumeri has become highly vulnerable in view of a cumulative rainfall of 9500 millimeter till now as against the last year’s total of 3583 millimeter, said Aparna Garg, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru Division South Western Railway. The train services on this route will remain suspended till August 25.

“In the past three days, there have been 42 incidences of land/boulder slides and tree fall between Donigal and Subrahmanya Road. About 32000 cubic meters of earth has fallen on the track resulting in damage to the tracks at various locations. Some bridges are also affected. Men and machines are working day in and day out with senior officers of the division personally monitoring the work. Ten Hitachi machines have been brought into the section through the goods train. However, because of repeated incidences of earth slips, the path of the material train is getting blocked and the restoration work is becoming an uphill task. Due to continuous to scattered heavy rainfall, it has been decided to stop night restoration works, as it endangers the life of railway/contract staff working in the section. Apart from railway officials, more than 140 labourers have been pressed into service”, added Aparna Garg. DRM also mentioned that in some parts the rain is almost double when compared to last year.

She also mentioned that, as there are several tunnels and limited path with huge earth slips, there are severe constraints. At full pace also, the work is likely to take a minimum one week’s time. In the interest of the safety of passengers, the train services will remain suspended till August 25 and the situation will be reviewed and reassessed thereafter and the status known depending on the weather condition and further incidents of landslips.
