Mangaluru: The Isiri India Mission held a ‘World Environment Day’ programme on the premises of the district jail and educated the inmates about the need for conserving nature on Saturday, June 8.

Organising environmental programmes in the premises of schools, colleges and private organisations is very common but is rare in jails. However, Isiri Healthy India Mission chose the district jail for World Environment Day on Saturday.

District Jail Superintendent Chandan Patil, after inaugurating the programme, informed that it was the responsibility of every citizen to conserve nature. “People should not wait for others to protect or conserve our nature. On the pretext of development, one should not opt for deforestation. If we don’t bother about protecting our nature, we would definitely face difficulties in future,” he warned.

The Scouts and Guides students of Canara English Medium school and officials of ‘CHD Group Centre for Health and Development’ also participated in the programme. As a part of the programme, different varieties of saplings were planted on the occasion.

The Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists President Srinivas Nayak Indaje, Working Committee Member Bhaskar Rai, Isiri Healthy India Mission Director Darshan Jain among others were present.
