Mangaluru: In connection with the ongoing Kateel Mela row, renowned Yakshagana playback singer (Bhagavath) Patla Sathish Shetty has warned of a defamation case against Kateel Mela convener Kalladi Deviprasad Shetty.

It may be recalled that Patla was denied a performance before the troupe could stage their act. After this row, the Temple Management Committee, led by Laxminarayana Asranna, who is also the principal priest of the Durgaparameshwari temple, accompanied by Deviprasad Shetty informed that Patla was already intimated that he would not be a part of the Mela this year. The duo had offered to come forth for an ‘Aanepramaana’ (to agree upon the same in front of the statue of Goddess Durga Parameshwari in Kateel). However, when Patla came over to the stage to render his voice, the troupe management was required to remind him of the same. According to them, Patla has blown the issue out of proportion.

Responding to these statements, Patla, who held a press conference in the city on Monday, November 25, refuted Asranna and Shetty’s claims and instead said that he was unaware that he was restricted from performing this year, and that he was ready to come forward to say the same in front of the idol of Goddess Durga Parameshwari in the temple (Anepramaana).

Patla said that over the last 19 years, he has been associated with the Kateel Mela and over this long association with the troupe, he has never violated its guidelines. “I have always given priority to the Kateel Mela. I have never placed any personal commitments and offers before the interests of the troupe. I have been associated with the Mela because I always felt it is one of the ways to serve Goddess Durgaparameshwari. I will always want to remain a part of this troupe,” he said adding that the artistes and performers are being pressurised.

“The artiste are subjected to atrocities of various forms,” he said adding that he always felt that the Mela must not be brought under the Muzrai department, but now, due to various reasons, he too will raise his voice to bring the Mela under the jurisdiction of the Department.
