Mangaluru: To combat the possible drinking water scarcity this summer, the water levels in the new Tumbe vented dam has been stored up to 5.60-meters high and this will be sufficient for a daily supply for up to 47 days in the city.
Mayor Bhaskar K Moily on March 16, informed the media that the MCC had made proper arrangements to maintain the same level of water till the end of May. As per the directions of Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, the Mangaluru City Corporation has taken the initiative to store water up to the level of 6 meters in the dam.
“When the water level in the dam is raised up to a height of 6 meters, a combined total of 30 acres belonging to 36 private land owners and 21.46 acres of government land will get submerged. To compensate for this, the state government has sanctioned Rs 10 Crore in compensation on March 2, for those whose lands will be submerged,” the mayor added.
Mayor Bhaskar also said that Rs 4 Crore compensation had been given to 12 land owners whose property was submerged when the water was stored up to 5 meters in the vented dam.
Mayor Bhaskar also cautioned the people of the city to utilise the water judiciously and ensure that water was not wasted.
