Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge and Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader inspected the ongoing work of Urwa market building on Monday, September 17 and set a deadline of one month to complete the work.
The market project costing Rs 10.5 crore is almost completed. When minister U T Khader visited the spot, fish vendors complained of lack of space at the new building. They also put forward their demand that they need a separate washroom and dressing room. Those who sell dry fish complained that there is no space for them as most of the slots would be taken away by the fresh fish vendors.
Receiving all the complaints from the vendors, Khader asked the officials of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to take measures to resolve the problems.
"If there is no space, measures should be taken to expand the building. As there is enough space in the adjacent building, a separate space for dry fish vending can be provided. Make sure that no vendor suffers due to a shortage of space," he said.
After instructing the officials, he spoke to the media persons and informed that measures will be taken to inaugurate the market building soon after the completion of the work. Besides that, there is a plan to construct a new market building at Kadri at the cost of Rs 12 crore and Kankanady market at the cost of Rs 41 crore. Earlier, there was a plan to construct a new Central Market under PPP model. However, now we are planning to construct it under smart city projects'', he added.
MCC Mayor Bhaskar Moily, Deputy Mayor Mohammed K, Commissioner Mohamed Nazeer, Deputy Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, chief whip of MCC Shashidhar Hegde, corporators Radhakrishna, T Praveenchandra Alva among others were present.
