Mangaluru: The Uppinangady police arrested three migrant women in connection with theft cases and seized gold ornaments and mobile phones worth a total of Rs Rs 4.39 Lakh on Wednesday, November 14.
The arrested have been identified as Devamma ( 19), wife of Pavan Raj, Nagamma (18), daughter of Siddana Gowda and Geetha (24), wife of Prakash alias Imran, all residents of Bannikoppa in Gadag district. Sources from Uppinangady Police Station informed that following a tip-off about three women who were loitering near Uppinangadi Sahasralingeshwar temple, a team of police headed by Uppinangady Inspector Nanda Kumar rushed to the spot and found it to be true. On noticing the police, they attempted to escape from there. Police chased and detained them for questioning. Police also seized gold ornaments weighing around 156.140 grams and two mobile phones from their possession.
During interrogation, it came to light that they are migrants from Gadag district and work as daily wagers in the rice plantations. When they do not get work, they engage in pick pocketing and burglary. As two of them have little children also, they used to beg in bus stands, railway stations among other public places.
The accused have been remanded to judicial custody, police said.
