Mangaluru: Learning should enrich the intellect and universities should become knowledge sources, opined Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. D Veerendra Heggade.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the 150th-year celebrations of University College Mangaluru, Hampanakatta here on Thursday, February 7, he said that he was also once a student of a government school. The best cows come only from cowsheds (Doddi). The illusion about government institutions should be dispelled from the minds, he said.
“Studies should not aim towards promotion, but it should be about gathering knowledge and sharing it. Universities should become intellectual sources. Nowadays, spoon-feeding is not all necessary, but teachers should try to become the best guides,” he added.
On the occasion, he released the ‘Vishwa Patha’, a souvenir. Chief Post Master (Karnataka Circle) released a special post cover to celebrate the 150th year celebration of the institution.
Former chief minister Dr. M Veerappa Moily released a collection of writings on the former principal of the college- Govinda Krishna Chettur on the occasion. He also hailed the institution for shaping his career as a writer and politician. Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof. P S Yadapadithaya recalled the contributions of the college and assured of developing the college into a model institution.
Former minister, MLA U T Khader and MLC Ivan D’Souza opined that the institution is helping students for the overall development and filling them with the courage to face society. Principal Dr. Uday Kumar M A recalled the history of the college and its uniqueness.
A three-day exhibition organized by the Department of History and Archeology, Archeological Survey of India, Postal department and Red Cross was also inaugurated.
Along with a get-together meeting, cultural programmes were held by the alumni and current students. Alumni Association President Col. Sharath Bhandary, Evening College Principal Ramakrishna B M, Corporator A C Vinayaraj, Shivakant Bajpai of Archeological Survey of India and others were present.
