Mangaluru: A newly constructed Father Muller Indoor Stadium-Gymnasium and Multi-Level Car Parking was inaugurated by Karnataka State Minister for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Affairs Pramod Madhwaraj on March 13, on the 177th birth anniversary of Fr. Muller.
Bishop of Mangalore Diocese Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza blessed the new buildings. Former Indian track and field star P T Usha was the chief guest of the event.
In his speech Dr. Aloysius Paul recounted the contributions of Father Muller and his service to the poor. "Today, the Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) continues his work," he added.
Reminiscing about the late Fr. Patrick D'souza, who was the former director of FMCI, the Bishop added that, his dream has come to fruition with the opening of this state-of-the-art sports facility.
Pramod Madhwaraj in his inaugural address lauded the management of the Father Muller Institutions for their initiative in building a marvellous infrastructure to promote sports.
Speaking about the recently announced sports policy of the state, Madhwaraj said that, the policy was designed with the belief that sports enhances the confidence of the youth. He added that the policy was sportsperson centric and caters to the needs of athletes.
P T Usha congratulated the Father Muller Institutions for setting up a modern indoor sports stadium.
The Father Muller indoor stadium, gymnasium and muli-level parking facility was constructed at a cost of Rs 30 Crore.
The indoor sports complex - with its 20,000 sq. ft. play area, polyurethane flooring and centralized airconditionig facility - is built as per the national stadards. The facilities at the complex are suitable for playing badminton, kabaddi, handball, volleyball and basketball. The gymnasium is designed to meet the needs of the athletes. The sports area also has pool tables, table tennis tables and a 1000 sq. ft. squash court.
The new 4-storey parking facility can house about 350 vehicles.
