Mangaluru: A 50-year-old truck driver, an employee of Delta Infra Logistics Limited, died after a loaded container slipped and compressed the driver’s cabin on Wednesday, November 6 night.
The deceased has been identified as Vinod Poojary, a resident of Vamanjoor.
According to the complaint filed at the Panambur police station, while the driver was trying to move his loaded container at the NMPT, it slipped and compressed his cabin. Vinod was extricated from the compressed cabin after the container was removed from the truck with the help of a crane and rushed to the hospital. Doctors at the hospital, however, pronounced him brought dead.
The All India Central Committee of Traders Union informed the media that the death was due to the poor implementation of safety standards for handing containers. The union has said that Vinod would have been alive if the ‘Safety Lock’ was in place.
The safety lock is used to prevent the sliding or slipping off a heavy container. Both agencies and the New Mangalore Port do not insist on the safety lock as it delays the loading and unloading of containers, the union alleged.
A case has been registered at the Panambur police station in this regard and an investigation is underway.
