Uppinangady: A ticketing blunder, which has come to light days after the KSRTC bus accident near Mani on March 14, has raised questions if the KSRTC is tactically been issuing tickets with differing bus numbers in order to escape paying compensation to the accident victims.

On Wednesday, a lady hailing from Ramanagara lost her life after the bus met with an accident owing to the driver’s reckless driving. The victim Divya was in town to visit an ailing relative and was travelling on the KSRTC bus bearing registration number KA 19 F 3143. However, the ticket issued to her bears a different bus number i.e., KA 19 F 2707. This finds a mention in the complaint filed by the victim’s husband against the bus driver for reckless driving resulting in the death of his wife.

The issue gains importance since during the investigation process, the bus number mentioned in the ticket is a prime evidence. However, in this case when the evidence is submitted to the court on behalf of the deceased woman, the registration number of the actual bus which met with the accident will not be accepted, thus making it difficult for the family to claim the compensation.

Notably, this is not an one-off case, says another passenger Vinayak Prabhu, a resident of Uppinangady. He, while travelling between Mangaluru to Puttur, too faced the issue when he was issued a ticket bearing a different bus no-KA 19 F 2660 when the actual number of the bus happened to be KA 21 F 0100. When he raised the issue with the conductor, he got a reply saying that the bus numbers are being fed into the machine in the office and their only job is to issue tickets.
