Sullia : For the first time in the history of Sullia assembly constituency, a woman candidate is in the poll arena. The KJP of former CM Yeddyurappa has fielded a lady candidate from this reserve constituency.

Bettampady Chandravathi is the woman who has been  given a ticket to contest from this constituency which had two other aspirants from the KJP.

When Sullia assembly constituency was first formed in 1962 it was made an ST reserve constituency. In 1967 it was an  SC reserve constituency. So far there have been a total of 12 elections in Sullia constituency and 42 candidates were in the fray. However, so far no woman candidate had contested from here.

Chandravathi had even contested the recently civic body polls from Jayanagar ward from KJP. She is also actively involved in various organizations.

It is learnt,  Kunhiraman, a former forest department staff and former MLA Kushala were the two other aspirants. Now Kushala has decided to contest as an independent

He had won from this constituency in the 1985 and 1989 elections from the Congress. However, he lost the 1994 and 1999 elections and was denied a ticket by the Congress in 2004. He had then contested from the JD(S), but was yet again defeated. He had later defected to the KJP.
