Mangaluru: The members of All College Students Union, Dakshina Kannada district has condemned the repeated suicide cases of students in the district by holding a huge protest and urged the government to take a legal action against the management of Expert College, where a 17-year-old student, Nevil Fernandes committed suicide leaving a death note few days ago.

The protest was organised in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office on Saturday, October 6, where hundreds of students shouted slogans against Expert College claiming that students who are studying at the college have always been pressurised by the lecturers and the school management.

All College Students’ Union district president Batish Alikemajal, while addressing the protesters said, “a total of five students have committed suicide in the short span of a month in Dakshina Kannada district.  Though a series of suicide cases have been reporting in the educational institutions over the days, the district administration has not taken any measures to control it.  Nevil Fernandes had mentioned two names in his death note alleging that they are responsible for his death. However, no action has been taken against that two persons. In order to check the repeated incidents of suicides, police should arrest both persons and send a strong message to those who pressurise the students in the name studies and academic,” he said.

Legal advisor of All College Students Union Dinakar Shetty said, “there is no other college in the state where the students are confined for nearly 12 hours in a day in the pretext of studies. Such an environment causes unnecessary pressure on the young minds of the students. Though the college allows co-education, why should the college put unnecessary restrictions on communicating between boys and girls?”, he questioned and urged the police and district administration to take legal action against the college management.

Union leaders Majeed, Nihal Rai among others spoke and condemned the repeated cases of students’ suicide. After the protest, a memorandum addressed to the chief secretary of Karnataka government was handed over to Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district.
