Mangaluru: It’s a gruelling task for the Subrahmanya police whenever an accused is arrested. With no higher court in Sullia taluk, the police have to travel around 110 kilometres to Mangaluru to produce the accused in the court. The journey to Mangaluru and back takes around 6 hours.
Sources from the police say that due to lack of bus facilities to Mangaluru in the evening, the police personnel have even travelled in lorries to produce the accused before the higher court in Mangaluru.
When a case is registered, the police produce the accused in a local court in Sullia, which is around 40 kilometres away. If the accused has to be produced in a higher court or remanded to judicial custody, then the escorting personnel will have to travel another 90 kilometres to Mangaluru with the accused, as the district jail is also situated in the city.
Police officials of Subrahmanya say that this has been the case since the police station was set up in 1997. The police station covers 19 villages under its jurisdiction. The police say that a higher court and a district jail in Puttur would be more convenient.
