Student found guilty of assault on principal, sentencing on Oct 22

Mangaluru: Mohammed Shahnawaz, a 22-year-old degree student at a private college in Mangaluru city, was on Tuesday, October 9, proved guilty of assaulting his principal almost two years ago.

The chargesheet against the accused was submitted by Police sub-inspector Madan and after the trial, he was found guilty by Judge Nerale Veerabhadrayya. Shahnawaz’s sentencing will be held on October 22.

Shahnawaz, a final-year BBA student at Milagres College, had assaulted the college principal Fr Michael Santhumayor on October 20, 2016, after he was warned about attending classes regularly. Raged by the principal’s attempts to discipline him, Shahnawaz attacked him and fled from the college premises.

Following the assault, a murder attempt case against the student was filed with the Bunder police under IPC sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).
