St Aloysius College bags 3rd rank in ‘Swachh Campus’ competition

Mangaluru: One of India’s top institutions, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru has ranked third in the country for having a best-maintained campus (residential college) under ‘Swachh Campus’ scheme of the Government of India. The ranks were announced by Minister for Human Resources Development Prakash Javdekar on October 1, 2018, in New Delhi and certificates were distributed.

St Aloysius College stands first in Karnataka State. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, Principal of the college addressed the press meet to announce this achievement.

The rankings are assessed on the basis of stringent guidelines laid down by MHRD. The parameters include cleanliness maintained in the campus, green initiatives, environmental protection measures, having sufficient toilets for the students and their maintenance, maintenance of the canteen, hostels, clean drinking water, green audit, energy conservation, waste management system, re-processing of waste, etc. Around 4000 colleges had applied, out of which 2000 institutions qualified to the second round.

The UGC committee, through a surprise visit to the college, made an assessment recently. The one of its kind Vermi Technology for disposing of organic waste managed by the college, the college’s Teresa Peace Park having different kinds of trees and plants with their names and biological names, adequate toilet facilities on the college campus are some points that helped the college in getting this ranking.

St Aloysius College selected for ‘Unnat Bharath’ scheme

St Aloysius College has also been selected by the MHRD under ‘Unnat Bharath’ scheme. The announcement was made on October 2, 2018. Under the scheme, five villages around Mangalore have been allocated to the college. They include Someshwar, Kandavara, Mulur, Pilatabettu and Kavalpadur. The scheme envisaged by the MHRD will be implemented through the Centre for Social Concern of the college. The college is planning to take the help of UG, PG and Social Work students in the scheme and also to apply the skills of the students for this and around 5000 plus students will be involved in this scheme.

The college runs Rs 1 revolution and other student involved fundraising activities to support the scheme. The college, as part of the scheme, plans to protect the environment, improve mother and child health care, awareness on social concerns on various issues, school development projects, prevention from addiction, soft skills training to improve employability and rural youth for higher education – Village to College programmes.

Dr. A.M. Narahari, Registrar; Dr Alwyn D’Sa, Director, Admin Block; Shwetha Rasquinha, Co-ordinator, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan; Chandrakala, PRO were present.
