Spandana, conference for social workers to be held on Jan 23, 24

Mangaluru: School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru is organizing Spandana – 2020, an International level Social Work Conference on the theme ‘Social Response to Climate Change’ on January 23 and 24.

Dr. Lars Eric Olson, associate professor of social work, Ersta, Skondal University, Stockholm – Sweden will be the chief guest for the inaugural of Spandana – 2020 on January 23. Dr. Juliet CJ, principal of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya will preside over the programme. Dr. Olson will deliver the keynote address.

The following renowned speakers are lined up to discuss the theme and sub-themes of the conference:
? Dr. Jaykumar (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bangalore): Natural and human induced climate change.
? Sri Panchakshari Hiremath(Founder President of Nature First Eco-village, Dharwad): Risk reduction in climate change.
? Janet Orlene and team: Climate change in relation to flood, livelihood, coastal survival, and solid waste management.
? Dr. Senthil Vel(Advisor to Ministry of Environment of forest and climate change, Government of India, New Delhi. Dean of college of fisheries, Mangalore): Synergy-networking and partnerships.

Students, academicians and professionals from different states and international universities will be participating in the conference. Cultural programs will be held on January 23 at 4 pm.

The valedictory of the meet will be held on January 24. Sri. Jagdish Naik, Vice President of Roshni Alumni Association, Bengaluru, will be the chief guest and Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice Principal will preside over the function.

Spandana is a platform for the convergence of social workers to share thoughts, ideas, and knowledge, and to work together to serve society in a better way. The need for the platform for the interaction to serve society was actuated during the year 2002 and the result is Spandana – Responding to Realities, an annual symposium for social workers.

The theme ‘Social Response to Climate Change’ is the need of the hour as an effective practice of the profession requires contextualization in accordance with the changing times. This conference aims to explore existing knowledge and theories of climate change by conceptualizing three important features; theoretical knowledge, factual knowledge and practical knowledge.
